Specification and Analysis of the DCF and PCF Protocols in the 802.11 Standard Using Systems of Communicating Machines

چکیده
We propose formal models for coordination functions of the 802.11 MAC layer using systems of communicating machines and analyze them. We model the basic DCF (CSMA/CA) protocol, the DCF protocol with RTS/CTS (MACA), and the PCF protocol. Analyses show the following safety results: the CSMA/CA protocol is free from deadlocks and non-executable transitions, the MACA has a potential livelock, but is free from deadlocks and nonexecutable transitions, and the PCF protocol is free from deadlocks and non-executable transitions. We also show that liveness is guaranteed in the PCF protocol.

Specification and Analysis of the DCF Protocol in the 802.11 Standard using Systems of Communicating Machines
The 802.11 specification is an emerging standard for WLANs. In this paper, we propose a formal model for a section of the 802.11 MAC protocol using systems of communicating machines. We model the ad-hoc mode of the DCF, i.e., CSMA/CA protocol and the MACA1 using RTS/CTS sequences. Each station is modelled as a finite state machine which has a set of local variables, and the Wireless Medium is m...

with the enhancement of wireless network, QoS has become major researcher area. IEEE802.11 standard has two sub layers MAC protocols like as Distribution Coordination Function (DCF), Point Coordination Function (PCF). Medium access coordination function basically implements the Distribution Coordination Function (DCF) and Point Coordination Function (PCF) which support just to best effort servi...
متن کاملInfrastructure-Based MAC in Wireless Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks
The IEEE 802.11 standard is the most popular Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for wireless local area networks. However, in an ad-hoc environment, the Point Coordination Function (PCF), defined in the standard, cannot be readily used. This is due to the fact that there is no central authority to act as a Point Coordinator (PC). Peer-to-peer ad-hoc mode in the IEEE 802.11 standard only imple...
متن کاملNew Channel Access Coordination Functions in Large Scale Wireless LAN Systems
Large-scale wireless LAN systems based on the IEEE 802.11 standards have become the most successful wireless networks deployed in large organizations, such as educational campuses and corporate warehouses. However, the suite of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols, including DCF, PCF and EDCA mechanisms, was unable to meet the challenges to provide collision freedom and differentiated quality of services....
متن کاملImproving the Aggregate Throughput of Access Points in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs
In IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, the DCF access method and the PCF access method operate alternatively within a superframe to service the time-varying traffic demands. Due to different medium access mechanisms deployed by DCF and PCF, they work well for some particular types of traffic scenarios respectively, while their performance may degrade under some other types of traffic demands. None of th...
